Incendiary Fortune
2026
Incendiary Fortune represents the incineration of democracy due to rise of oligarchic power in the United States. As political and economic power is concentrated in a small group of wealthy individuals and corporations, the average citizen has little influence over economic and political decisions that directly influence their lives. The concentration of wealth and power weakens democracy contributing to economic inequality and diminished purchasing power leaving many with a life that has gone up in flames.
Eleven of Hathaway’s photographs were digitally cut, blended, warped, and painted including a hand-folded dollar shirt, multiple photographs of flames, an American Eagle photographed at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum in Williamsburg and NASA photographs of a galaxy and the Earth at night.
