The Grand Design
2026
The Grand Design reveals the creation of life. A golden fish invites a sense of wonder, invoking the spirit of the Marvellous. Echoing Hokusai’s print The Great Wave off Kanagawa, a cresting wave spirals in a state between permanence and movement. The stone figure, waves and foreground resist the concept of fluidity as the solid shapes dissolve and transform into tender hands and energetic creation. This transformation unfolds into an everlasting state of becoming.
Six photographs were digitally cut, blended, warped, and painted including a figure from the Musee des Arts et Metiers in Paris and a bejeweled fish from The Musée des Arts Décoratifs also in Paris. The stone sea and wave were photographs of the iconic gate from the Chinesisches Tor, in The Hague, Netherlands. A print of Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa was used as a template to form the wave. A dark Hawaiian sky acts as the background.
